6 Steps to consider after installing Ubuntu 11.04

by Shawn D'souza

So you have installed the new Ubuntu 11.04 version. Wonder what next? Here are 6 steps post-installation to get you up and running on your new operating system.

installing Ubuntu

1. Browse new features

The new Ubuntu 11.04 ropes in a range of features and apps that you may miss out on a few of them. So for all those new to it, heres a quick clip to help you start off -

2. Run Update Manager

Search for the Update Manager in the dashboard and run it. All that will follow is one of the finest version of Ubuntu.

3. Install codecs/ other formats

The Ubuntu installer provides an option to add a few codecs that are absent on your system in order for you to run files likes MP3s, DVD's and WMV videos. This is for those who blew past the 'install 3rd party codecs/ restricted drivers' while installing Ubuntu on their systems.

Ubuntu provides alerts on the availability of 3D drivers in the 'circuit board' that appears in the top panel. Follow the instructions upon clicking. In case there is a failure in detection you can manually run it. Open the 'Application Lens' and browse for the 'Hardware Configuration Tool'.

For those of you whose hands are just itching to show off your Linkin Park and Tiesto digital collection, ensure you have the required codecs installed to make this happen.

This will enable those files and software that are not shipped in order to make ensure a smooth running on Ubuntu.

4. Look into Indicator Applets

The GNOME desktop panel as well as the notification systems are done away with by Ubuntu. Dont fret though! When something goes, it is always replace with something much better. Indicator applets lets you add RSS feeds, screensavers, timers, Weather applets and clipboard managers.

5. Ubuntu Software Center – place to be

We know Banshee, Libre Office and PiTiVi may not be showing you the magic. Time to set your sights elsewhere!

  • Chromium web browser replacing Forefox
  • Pidgin replacing Empathy
  • OpenShot as a video editor
  • Thunderbird for your email application
  • AbiWord as an easy-to-learn word processor

Here's a video to guide you through installing applications.

6. Changing the Interface

If Unity does not fancy you, there's always the Classic-styled Ubuntu. Once you reach the login screen,

  • Click on to your name
  • Find session menu at the bottom of screen
  • Replace 'Ubuntu' with 'Ubuntu Classic'
  • Click on log in

Nothing comes with the flash of a wand! The new version will take some time to sink in. As said before, some aspects may have been replaced, but only to introduce something better.

Go on, open a new leaf; or should I say app?
