Bharti Airtel has become the first private sector company to launch Internet Protocol Television (IPTV) services in India.

airtelThe company, which is the largest cellular operator in the world, is expected to announce further plans later this week. After Airtel’s recent success with their DTH (direct to home) service, the news of an IPTV follow up will certainly enthrall just about anyone who loves watching television on the go.

The Bharti Airtel IPTV service will be aimed at its subscribers. The mobile giant is also planning on a tie up with Future Group’s Big Bazaar in order to market and sell both IPTV, as well as DTH services. Airtel has already tested IPTV in the areas of Gurgaon and NCR (National Capital Region), but is gearing up to send services out to eight of the major cities around the country.

UTStarcom, the US based networks conglomerate has been assigned as the technology partner for its IPTV service. IBM is also on board, as they are already providing solutions for Bharti Airtel’s DTH platform. This will surely give them Bharti Airtel an edge over the competition.

MTNL and BSNL are currently the only two telecommunication companies that offer IPTV services, which is available only in select cities with the collaboration of Aksh Optifibres. Aksh has also recently been offering IPTV services sans broadband connection in order to make the service a trend with users. The other big player in the IPTV game this year will be the Anil Dhirubhai Ambani group.

Bharti Airtel is India’s largest cellular operator with over 79 million subscribers, and has over 3 million broadband customers in 95 cities.
