Recently, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) decided to launch themselves on social networking sites like Orkut and Facebook. Their sole motive is to create awareness among the younger lot regarding an emerging social issue i.e. water crisis.

Municipal-Corporation-of-Greater-MumbaiThe water scarcity problem in Mumbai that rose up earlier this year proves to be an issue that needs to be dealt with. Hence, the BMC have decided to dive straight into the social networking sea to bring this issue to the notice of the youth.

Within a couple of weeks, the BMC will be the first Municipal Corporation in the country to architect such an execution. Since Facebook and Orkut are two of the largest social networking sites, it would be an ideal maneuver. The communities on these networking sites have a large fan following and daily visitors. Thus, it would be the most convenient way to spread awareness to a large mass in relatively less time.

The BMC would address subjects like water conservation, desalination, water sanitation and harvesting and more. They would also have success stories incorporated on this page. Visitors would be able to post in their views, comments or ideas. It would be an interactive profile in order to collectively battle out the water crisis.

They have also planned to rope in students from various colleges to assist with their ideas. Students could call on 22620251 (extension 2309) if they feel they could provide some valuable insights in creating an impressive BMC profile. These students would be from colleges at random and could volunteer to participate. They would handle the profile and keep updating it regularly with information. It could be considered as project work for these students. There is none better than the youth, to be the intermediaries between the BMC and the thousands visiting these sites.

This execution would be considered as one of the biggest moves in the history of the Indian government body. The very fact that the BMC have planned to create a profile on Facebook and Orkut would attract many eyeballs.

Do you think such an initiative will help BMC raise awareness among the younger generation?
