“If you smell what Twitter is cooking!” We’ve only altered the historic phrase by Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson to suit the social networking site here. Why?

As reports go, over 50 WWE related topics were trending on Twitter following the World Wrestling Entertainment’s special event, ‘Royal Rumble’. While some were understandable, others made little less sense.

Several whacky spellings of Vickie Guerrero began to trend when she was sent backstage during one of the matches. A commercial feautring Big Show, Eve Torres and Rey Mysterio led to ‘Slim Jims’ trending on the micro-blogging site.

Hunico may have stolen Sin Cara’s entrance when he paraded in as a ‘fake’ Sin Cara, but that only led to the masked wrestler getting his share of publicity on Twitter.

John Morrison shot to fame with his amazing save in last year’s Royal Rumble, and he started trending again when Kofi Kingston pulled off a similiar move this year.

Road Dogg unintentionally (and unwillingly) led to his former partner from New Age Outlaws, Billy Gunn to trend after his entry in the ring.

While Kia Stevens may have donned a new avatar as Kharma, it seems his past wouldn’t let go. When Kharma made his entrance, his alter-ego Awesome Kong was more talked about in Twitter than his current role.

The trends put up quite a list and go by the lines of -

With the increasing controversy on filtering content that is posted onto social networks, Twitter seems to have a solution in hand. In a move to censor messages, the micro-blogging website has recently refined its technology to suit requirements. This refined solution will offer the company an option to censor messages country-by-country.

The announcement comes when the company is all set to expand its network into new territories. With support for Urdu, Arabic, Hebrew and Farsi, Twitter hopes to increase its user base to 100 million users and generate better revenue. In an official blog post, Twitter said that with the company’s global expansion,

“we will enter countries that have different ideas about the contours of freedom of expression. Some differ so much from our ideas that we will not be able to exist there. Others are similar but, for historical or cultural reasons, restrict certain types of content, such as France or Germany, which ban pro-Nazi content.”

According to social networking site, the new feature is designed keeping transparency in mind. Twitter also said that they

“will attempt to let the user know, and we will clearly mark when the content has been withheld.”

Although Twitter is yet to implement the feature, it has tied up with chillingeffects.org to share removal requests from Governments, individuals and companies.

We will have to wait and see if such a move can create a clean impression for Twitter in the minds of government bodies and other such organizations.

If you got something to say, tweet it!! At least that’s what Grammy Award-winner and esteemed rapper, Kanye West believes in. Yesterday, Weezy reportedly spent more than three hours posting around 80 tweets in the wee hours of the morning. These tweets discussed West’s views on politics, infrastructure, his struggles in the fashion industry and his latest inspiration, his late mother Donda West, because of who he has started a design company in her name.

Various media outlets like MTV and Slate (to name a few) have tried to interpret the ‘All of the Lights singer’s tweets in ways that could be creatively useful. West has referred to legendary figures like Michael Jackson, Alexander McQueen and Steve Jobs in one of his tweets stating that,

“We need to take what Michael Jackson felt and McQueen and Steve Jobs and we need make things better.”

The thought here is great, but this is not the first time Kanye West has been a part of such tweets. In 2005, he went out of the way to ignore his script and targeted the former U.S. President, George Bush during a beneficial show for ‘Hurricane Katrina’. In 2009 he jumped on stage and grabbed the microphone from award-winner Taylor Swift during the MTV Video Music Awards just to state that Beyonce had “one of the best videos of all time.”

According to US Weekly Music Editor Ian Drew,

“He’s a mad genius, his ideas are grandiose, but if you look at the history of Kanye, he would tweet an idea and it would happen. He’s trying to be understood and heard.”

The author of ‘The Cult of Celebrity’, Cooper Lawrence seems to think otherwise. According to her,

“In general, Kanye is someone who thinks he is incredibly important.” she further went on to explain Kanye’s behaviour through his posts on Twitter saying that this “showed insight into who he really is. He’s someone who lost his mother very early in a surprising way. He’s gone through a lot of pain and he might not have someone to talk to, his life is lonelier than people realize.”

Well it is safe to say that Twitter can definitely impact many impressions online. A simple tweet can help you create a huge impact and increase prospective followers/ fans. As for ‘Ye’ as the rap moghul is fondly called; we can be rest assured we will be witnessing many more marvellous tweets and quotes from him.

The popularity of the micro blogging site Twitter has shot up immensely in the past 5 years. Indian celebrities have developed an increasing interest for the social networking website. Tweets by some active Bollywood personalities like Amitabh Bachchan, Priyanka Chopra and Karan Johar are admired and answered by millions of followers on the site.

Amitabh Bachchan is one of the most liked celebrities and currently is leading the Indian followers list. He sits at 1.85 million followers which is some 0.1 million more than Priyanka Chopra.

Surprisingly, Indian Twitter rankings are ruled by Bollywood celebrities. These top two Indian celebrities are active on Twitter and do not refrain to engage with their audience on a personal level. Last year, Amitabh Bachchan broke the news of his daughter-in-law’s pregnancy and delivery of a baby girl on Twitter.

The list also features cricketing legend Sachin Tendulkar at number three with 1.78 million followers. Although the little master is not as active as the other two in top three, he is a well recognized personality and is considered as cricketing god by ardent cricket fans.

The King Khan of Bollywood, Shahrukh Khan stood fourth on Twitter popularity with 1.61 million followers. The fifth and sixth spots were occupied by other two Khans of the Bollywood industry – Aamir Khan and Salman Khan respectively.

The twitter rankings of Indian celebrities is not even close to that of Internationals stars like Lady Gaga (17million followers), but the increasing interest of Indians in Twitter is a positive sign for everyone.

In a bid to make the microblogging service easier, Twitter has completely redesigned its website. Apart from this, TweetDeck, iOS and Android apps have also undergone major changes. With the new interface, the tweet window is pushed back on the right side of the screen. On the new Twitter Home page, tweets appear on the right side and do not use much space as before.

Twitter has also added 3 new buttons – Home, @Connect and #Discover, which can be seen at the top of the page. #

Discover shows the trending topics and directs you to notable videos and stories. On the other hand, @Connect displays people who have mentioned you in their tweets. It also suggests some accounts that you may want to follow.

Apart from the newly designed website, Twitter has also announced the launch of Facebook-style brand pages program. Launch partners for the brand pages include, Best buy, Chevrolet, Bing, American Express, Disney, Dell, Coca-Cola, Intel, General Electric, Hewlett-Packard, McDonald’s, Nike, Kia, Staples, PepsiCo, JetBlue, NYSE Euronext, Verizon Wireless, Subway and Heineken. Paramount Pictures is also one of the launch partners, especially for the release of Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol.

With the introduction of brand pages, Twitter will allow advertisers to customize their headers to make their tagline and logo more prominent. According to the Advertising Blog of Twitter, brands will also be able to control the message that is visible to their visitors. The idea is, to allow brands showcase their best content. The Promoted Tweet on the profile page of marketer will auto-expand, thus allowing visitors to see a video or photo content that is linked from a tweet.

Here is a video that describes the new features of redesigned Twitter.

In a recent survey, Twitter came up with the most popular subjects of 2011. It revealed that the Egyptian uprising and Charlie Sheen were the trending topics and got maximum eyeballs. A group of tweets hovered around Egypt and #egypt became the most used hashtag. It showed how important the site was for the uprising against the regime of Hosni Mubarak.

It was followed by #tigerblood, which referred to a comment by Charlie Sheen after he was sacked from the famous sitcom ‘Two and a Half Men’. He was the most talked about celebrity on Twitter, his public breakdown was aptly explained on the site. His popularity attracted a whopping 1 million followers in a day’s time. This happened in March and its statistic has broken almost all records.

Mubarak‘s resignation also garnered interest topping news list after which US special force’s raid on Osama‘s home followed suit. Another topic which created quite a buzz was the Japanese earthquake and tsunami. Rebecca Black, the teenager singer surpassed the tsunami too becoming a global trending topic. About 100 million people became a part of Twitter in 2011 and people like Simon Cowell, Salman Rushdie, Gwyneth Paltrow and Gary Barlow were welcomed by Twitter.

There were many other popular hashtags too in the year. These trends show how Twitter has connected with the people having common interests. People have interacted on almost everything under the sun. Many were seen quoting that they preferred checking out Twitter rather than watching the TV. Twitter has proved its mettle and is here to stay!

After a month long court battle, social networking giant Twitter has finally managed to trademark the word ‘Tweet’. The word which has been used synonymously with posting on Twitter did not have a registered mark which made it easier for competitors to use it.

Yesterday, CEO of Twittad, James Eliason announced that they would hand over the registered trademark of ‘Tweet’ back to Twitter in exchange of the social networking website dropping the lawsuit they filed against Twittad, according to the Wall Street Journal.

He even said that Twitter would restore their account on the Website so that they can re-open their business. The digital start pays 27,000 Twitter users to post advertisements on the microblogging website.

Last month, Twitter had filed a petition in which they claimed that the term Tweet was already famous before other rivals filed trademark applications on it. The suit went on to say that another company acquiring the rights of the term ‘threatens to block Twitter from its registration and legitimate uses of its own mark.’

Lynn Fox, spokesperson for Twitter said,

“We’ve arrived at a resolution with Twittad that recognizes consistent use of Tweet while supporting the continued success of Twitter ecosystem partners like Twittad”

Although Twittad did not confirm if they received a settlement amount for handing over the rights, reports confirmed that Twitter allowed them to use their original tag line-

Let your ad meet tweets.

With privacy infringement growing rapidly over the past few years, this development by Twitter will serve as an eye opener for many.

The social media war has reached its peak and the effects can be seen on Twitter. According to reports, the social networking giant is worried about its future.

In the recent past, Twitter has been very insecure about the fact that the Technology bubble might just burst crushing their future aspirations. The network has been putting a lot of pressure on it’s employees to increase their profits at least till the company remains popular.

Currently, Twitter is valued at £5 billion, but many analysts have their doubts about the valuation. The main reason for the mistrust is the fact that the social network has not been able to define its core USP. This can prove to be very doubtful for its future share prices.

According to Twitter co-founder Evan Williams,

“We’re a fraction of the way into creating the value and growing the size of the service we know it can be. It’s precarious, and it’s always precarious when you’re in that position.”

Twitter developers have been disappointed from the past couple of months because of the lack of new additions to the portal. Other competitors like Facebook and Google + have come up with radical changes on their platforms since the past couple of days.

Apart from this, the lack of a strong user base has been a matter of worry for Twitter. Though they have 100 million users, the number seems insignificant when compared to Facebook’s 750 million users. Even the 30 million users of Google + can cause a problem for Twitter in the future.

With the Internet market being in a volatile situation, Twitter’s lack of upgrades on its network may just make their worst nightmare become a reality.

In a perfect combination of nature and social media, scientists at Botanicalls, a botanical development firm has developed a technology that lets your plants send a tweet on your account every time they need water or other nutrition. This innovation will come as good news for many Twitter users who have a green thumb.

The company provides tools called as a ‘Botanicalls Kit’ which includes a sensor device which has to be placed in the soil of your plant.

If the moisture content of the plant drops the sensor detects it and sends out an electronic signal which can be picked up by local communication channel and converted into a tweet which gets sent to the owner.

The sensors can warn uses if there is excessive water via tweets as well. To add to that, the device sends you a ‘Thank You‘ tweet once the plant has sufficient nutrition.

The device is available for sale on the Botanicalls website . The device is shaped like a leaf so that it can easily blend with your plants. It is available at a cost of Rs. 6,500 in India.

This is one technology that will surely ‘grow’ on people.
