Those who still reminisce a bout the good old days have a pleasant surprise in store for them soon! Diamond Comics, publisher of popular Indian comic characters such as Chacha Choudhary, Pinky and many more are bringing them to electronic media. They have tied up with License India, and plan to launch the characters online, as well as on mobiles. The plans for TV also seem to be on, as they have been in talks with several animation studios.

The firms will be launching plenty of merchandise soon such as toys, clothes and stationary. Only last week, Amar Chitra Katha Media teamed up with Vodafone Essar to launch mobile content in the form of audio books, ringtones, wallpapers and illustrated comics with various characters. Mobile games starring characters such as Bheema and Shikari Shambhu were also launched. Even Chandamama signed an MoU with Toonz Animation, and will be producing a 70 minute animated feature film.

The animation industry is growing rapidly, and the comeback medium is fueling it forwardshaktimaan even more. Although this movement started in Japan and China, India is not very far behind. There are plenty of animations based on Indian cultural icons and old time comic book characters, leaving plenty more scope in their favour. In the year 2008, 85 domestic animation movies were announced, out of which 28 are in various stages of production. Some might argue that this is a very short-term demand, which will eventually fizzle out, but as of now, the going is good, which is making a lot of waves in the animation industry.
