EC-Media International, a Bangalore based digital publisher launched “WINK”, a versatile e-book

reader with Wink Wire as the first e-reader newspaper in India through an alliance with IANS, India’s largest independent news service for Wink Wire. Wink at present is much in comparison with the Amazon’s Kindle, which is known for its delivery in 100 countries including India. Wink however has more appealing and useful features comparatively. The company has a tie-up with Croma, a TATA enterprise promoted electronics mega store in India as its retail partner and Redington as its distribution partner.

The initial price for Wink is set at Rs. 11,500 making it a challenging option for the ‘common reader’ in India. However for the upper-class it’s likely to be a worth investment, all thanks to its appealing as well as useful features.

Coming to the features, most of you are likely to get impressed as you read on. It displays the content on a 6-inch screen through an e-ink technology in 15 languages including many Indian languages too, covering over 2, 00, 000 titles. The e-ink technology is similar to Kindles which consumes lesser power and gives a feel of a printed book making reading experience totally stress free during daytime and nighttime. However it is not backlit like an LCD so requirement of light would be a necessity. It also provides with an option to surf and buy e-newspapers, e-magazines, e-journals in Indian Rupees. It has roped in top publishers like Penguin, Roli, Oxford University, Happer Collins, permanent Black are the ones for content.

Further the device is only11mm thick and weighs as much as a 300-400 pages novel. A battery of 1500 mAh runs continuously for 300 hours when fully charged. It has 2-GB in built memory and a SD slot for expansion. It supports WiFi in its XTS model and WiFi and 3G in its X3G model. It also comes with a QWERTY keypad making it comfortable to put inputs relating to search.

Wink is likely to influence the youth because of its versatility. It makes it an interesting product to hang around with, making reading experience fun. However with such vast options of wireless reading options coming up, the idea of classroom learning seems to be fading away.
