It looks like our telecom sector is bursting with ideas. Today morning DigiMouth featured a news item wherein the Department of Telecom (DoT) had decided to offer IMEI numbers in turn saving over 25 million handsets from being dysfunctional. Well it seems like even Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has a basket full of ideas.

Well for the ignorant ones ENUM technology bridges your telephone system and the Internet. The technology helps convert traditional telephone numbers into a universal identifier for varied Internet services. The ENUM digi_mouth_enumu_tech_cartoon technology lets subscribers to use their mobile numbers as an email address. So two individuals simply need to exchange contact numbers to explore the undying possibilities of the Internet.

Though it is gong to take a while for Indians to implement the US will witness the launch by next year. Experts the world over believe that the juxtaposition of ENUM technology and VoIP would be a boon to the telecom world.

Finally! Of course, it would be the pressure from the lobby backed by the operators in India who fear a major loss in revenue. But this is more than just the lobbyists wanting revenue. In this day and age, having some kind of accountability/ identification attached to the phone is very necessary from a security point of view, especially when the phones can do so much more than make calls.

This will make a huge difference not just directly to the telecom industry but rather to the whole ecosystem that uses the IMEI numbers to identify the unique visitors. IMEI numbers are a very significant piece of information which is used by applications especially ones related to communication in a variety of ways.
