Computing giant Dell has taken over cloud computing company Wyse Technology to increase and develop its desktop virtualization presentation. The terms and details of the buyout were not disclosed.

Wyse Technologies specialise in thin, zero and cloud PC client solutions with a high level of management pertaining to desktop virtualisation and cloud software supporting desktops, laptops, high end mobile phones. Wyse works independently with datacenter, networking and a mix of providers within its terrestrial ecosystem to help its business grow to a secure cloud- in a private, public, government or, even in a personal cloud.

Wyse was formed in the year 1981, and offers an array of products which include cloud clients, cloud storage, mobility and virtualization software. Among these is PocketCloud, which converts smart phones or tablets to a virtual desktop by enabling you access to your computer desktop through a mobile device, any time, any place.

Wyse has exported over 20 million devices and more than 200 million customers using their services. It also owns more than 180 patents, some of which have been issued, while some are pending. These patents cover its solutions, software and varied intellectual possessions.

The company says the addition of Wyse;

will expand Dell’s desktop virtualization capabilities and provide new solutions and services opportunities for the full range of Dell’s enterprise offerings.

Red Hat, the Linux vendor has become the first open source vendor to cross $1bn earnings over a period of 12 months. For the financial year ending 29th February 2012, the company has posted record revenues of $1.3bn. The popular Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) distributor announced its financial revenues of $297m for the fourth quarter, which is a rise of 21 per cent from the previous year.

CEO and president of Red Hat, Jim Whitehurst said that,

Red Hat is the first pure-play, open source company, and one of only a select few software companies, to have achieved the billion dollar revenue milestone. The open source technologies which we provide are being selected by more customers every day as they re-architect the infrastructure of their data centres for greater efficiency, agility and cloud enablement.

While Red Hat seems more like an Linux vendor focused enterprise, most of the firm’s business comes from support, subscriptions and training programmes. The company has significant percentage of source code in the Linux kernel and open sourcing RHEL helps in creating a base for Scientific Linux and Free Cent OS distributions.

The success of Red Hat is shared with its wider user base and open source community. Looking at the success and revenues of Red Hat, it is apparent that open source operating systems can also help software development companies earn money. Unlike buying a closed source OS, open source OS won’t create a hole in your wallet.

With Linux gaining immense popularity, are you still hooked on to closed source OS? Well then, its time you need to get your hands on Linux. For those who are unaware, Linux can also be installed inside Windows with dual-boot option.

On the 1st of April, 2012 Mashable published a report titled ‘Conan O’Brien Buys Mashable, Ousts Pete Cashmore as CEO’. Pete Cashmore is the founder and CEO of Mashable, aTechnorati Top 10 blog.

The news shocked followers throughout the worldwide digital community with a (quite rude) video of Conan O’Brien declaring that;

I go to the Mashable see the atrocious job they’re doing. So I decided it’s time for me to take it over. That’s why, several hours ago, I called Pete Cashmore and I told him, “You’re out! Get out! You’re through Cashmore! Through! Get out!

The video also showed O’Brien promising the people that he would be bringing about very many changes to the working of the site. Conan then went on to post some hilarious tweets from the Mashable twitter account like:

I just checked to see if the URL http://Apple.com has been taken. It has. #Conashable

Why can’t someone invent a wireless mouse? Can someone please call @BillGates and get this done? #Conashable

However, the news was followed-up a few hours later by another report which was just as befuddling. Conan O’Brien now apologises for the misunderstanding and states that he did not buy the site.

In a quite hilarious turn of events, a visibly exasperated O’Brien has realised that he was not speaking to Pete Cashmore but one Paul Cashmonanski and has purchased a fan site for the television classic ‘Mash’.

He is thus “returning” Mashable to Pete Cashmore, but not before sending one final tweet saying,

Conan here. After months of deliberation, I’ve decided to end my reign as @Mashable’s CEO.

He regretfully says that “our long and incredible journey” has come to an end.

An interesting thing noted by the DigiMouth team was that both videos were uploaded on Mashable’ Youtube Channel before either of the reports went live.

It seems Pete Cashmore, Conan O’Brien and Mashable really enjoyed this year’s April Fools Day.

Instagram, the popular photo-filtering and sharing iPhone app is finally making its way to Google’s Android OS. It’s been a long time since we first heard about the Instagram app for Android, but there was no specific launch date. Unfortunately, we still don’t have the exact date as to when the app will be available for download, all we know is that will release very soon.

Mike Krieger and Kevin Systrom, founders of Instagram recently spoke about the Android version of the famous photography app at the SXSW in Austin, Texas. Systrom also said that the Android version of the app is slightly better than the iPhone version.

For those who are unaware about Instrgram, it is a social networking service that allows users to upload and share photos. Unlike Facebook, Flickr and other photo sharing services, Instagram is only available on smartphones, for now, only on iPhone. As the service does not feature any web interface, the only way of uploading photos is using the smartphone app.

Systrom said,

“I don’t think it took us so long. We just had priorities. Had we tried to be both on Android and iPhone at the same time, it would’ve been tough to innovate in the way that we have.”

He further added that Instagram currently has approximately 27 million users.

Once the app hits Google Play App Store, it will be interesting to see the reaction of Android users who have been eagerly waiting for it. In the mean time, you can check out similar apps that are available out there, including mytubo and Lightbox for Android. Till then, stay tuned for more updates.

Time Internet Limited (TIL) has partnered with GENWI, a cloud-based Publishing Company, to launch India’s first Tablet magazine.

The magazine can be accessed only on the iPad as of now but may soon be available for iPhone as well as on Android Devices soon.

Tweek is a weekly magazine that will basically feature stories from all around the world on a variety of subjects that will range from business to entertainment and lifestyle and even sports. It has an interactive format that allows the readers to instantly share stories on various social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter. At the same time, they are also allowed to give their feedback to the Tweek team. Apart from reading, one can also listen and watch a story.

CEO of Times Internet Limited, Rishi Khiani, stated,

“With Tweek’s launch, we intend to pioneer the tablet magazine space in India. We are interested to experiment with different ways to monetise our content beyond traditional web advertising. Taking advantage of this new medium, which incorporates the rich engagement features of the web into a mobile touch experience on a larger screen, we can deliver new advertising concepts. GENWI’s Cloud Publish solution enables us to deliver contextual commerce, rich-media advertorials that are geo-location aware, and switch out advertisers or ad units on the fly.”

The feedback given by the readers will be received directly by the writers of Tweek, giving the readers the opportunity to give their opinions and eventually shape the magazine and ‘Tweek’ it into something that they will look forward to every week.

GENWI Founder and CEO, P J Gurumohan said that,

“With the power of the cloud, Tweek will save time and production costs by reusing design layouts from week to week, all in standard web-based protocols such as HTML5, CSS and JavaScript. The most groundbreaking aspect of the application is the way it surfaces existing content and takes advantage of the tablet experience to create higher levels of reader engagement, and the flexibility to explore new monetisation channels.”

Well, it seems like all the hype and rumours surrounding the new Apple iPad 3 is gaining a more concrete structure. A report from “previously reliable” sources surfaced a few days ago stating that Apple is set out to launch its latest technological marvel in the first week of March itself.

The 7th of March 2012 is streaming out to be one of the most likely days when Apple plans to announce the much awaited iPad 3. This is huge!

With a 2048 x 1536 resolution that makes it a retina display, a possible 4G LTE networking and a quad-core Apple A6 processor, this new baby looks to be a very promising. The availability of a compatible Qualcomm chipset has provided ‘convincing’ proof for the usage of the 4G LTE networking, but the chances however, are still slim. This technology may still be queued up for the Apple iPhone 5 held to be released sometime in the last quarter. Let’s hope we get to see this breakthrough technology feature in the iPad 3 initially.

It is safe to say that whatever maybe the surprise in store for us, reviewing Apple’s latest iPad 3 is something that we definitely cannot wait for!

The censorship issue among social networking sites has reached a whole new level. Brazil seems to be the first country to apply new censorship rules to Twitter. A year ago Twitter posted on its blog stating that,

The open exchange of information can have a positive global impact … almost every country in the world agrees that freedom of expression is a human right. Many countries also agree that freedom of expression carries with it responsibilities and has limits.

This however, does not seem to be the case with Twitter’s growing international popularity. On the 27th of January 2012, Twitter announced in its official blog post that a restrictive policy will be followed, where objectionable content posted on the site will be censored, but only in the country that has a problem with it. In our opinion, that’s a pretty smart thing to do!

It definitely makes sense. How do we exercise freedom of speech if everyone seems to have a problem with it? So if the government of your country has an issue with a particular post on Twitter, no worries, it will be censored only in that country itself. This isn’t a pioneered move on behalf of Twitter as Google has been following this policy for quite some time now. The only difference is that they haven’t made a public announcement yet.

According to CNN in its official news site the government of Brazil has filed a suit on the against Twitter with a concern to suspend user accounts of people leaking out information about police road blocks and hiding spots. This seems to make sense as tipping off offenders with the help of a social networking site is not helpful if the country is trying to reduce the crime rate in the country.

The government, in a lawsuit at a Federal Court in Goais, is demanding a fine of 500,000 Reais per day when Twitter and the offenders do not comply to the policies of Brazil. OUCH!

Well, it is safe to say that this seems to be the best thing to do as Brazil’s government attorneys’ state that these checkpoints set up by the police,

serve to combat other serious crimes, such as car theft, the transport of illegal weapons and drug trafficking.

The transparency movement initiated by TRAI continues. Next move by the telecom authority makes it mandatory for service providers to offer more transparency in their services to prepaid users.

The details shared would include call duration, balance details, deducted charges, internet data usage and other such information. Airtel has become the first operator to implement the changes.

As per the new recommendations by TRAI, the charges for detailed bill should not exceed the amount of Rs.50.

The official statement released by Airtel says,

Prepaid My Account is a simple, secure and convenient way for Airtel prepaid mobile customers to access a whole host of functionalities including checking balance, recharging, starting or stopping VAS services (value added services) etc. Airtel prepaid mobile customers can visit the new self care website to receive and activate customized offers on ‘My Airtel, My Offer’ (MAMO), view tariff and top up options, request for the itemized bill and more

If everything goes according to plan, the report states that,

Customers can also view last 5 recharge details. So far, there was no regulatory guideline to provide pre-paid customers itemised bills who had no record of their calls and other services.

The sudden change in TRAI’s stringent rules and conditions for operators is for the sole purpose of maintaining transparency. The tariff rates would be published in newspapers and to avoid operators from wrongfully charging the users on the eve of special occasions.

Here’s some bad news for people who use multiple SIM’s. Any number kept inactive for more than 60 days will be deactivated. This is in accordance to TRAI’s decision of allocation new numbers to service providers. The decision is mainly a concern to people who use alternate SIM mainly while travelling.

National Aeronautics and Space Administration, the US based government agency for aerospace and aeronautics research, has now come up with a game for Facebook, the popular social media site. Dubbed as ‘Space Race Blast off’, the game is a mix of “Space Camp” and “Jeopardy” games.

It is basically a quiz game about NASA history and space exploration. Players who make a right guess will b e eligible to win NASA astronomical objects, astronaut badges and small miniature spaceships, specially designed by the game de signing team of NASA.

The game has both multiplayer as well as single player modes where players can choose an avatar and answer 10 multiple-choice questions. Each correct answer earns 100 points, with a 20-point bonus to the player who answers first. The player with the most points gets to play a bonus round which then awards them badges depicting astronauts, spacevrafts, planets etc.

David Weaver, from NASA’s headquarters in Washington said,

We’re hoping Space Race Blast Off opens NASA’s history and research to a wide new audience of people accustomed to using social media. Space experts and novices will learn new things about how exploration continues to impact our world

With this new endeavour, NASA seems to be making an attempt to inspire young minds to get involved in astronomical careers. This move will not only help to encourage individuals, but also increase their knowledge about astronomy. Besides garnering support for NASA, it may also help to pull more crowds to Facebook.

The mystery illness of LeRoy is making rounds in the world and in every other country. Researchers are coming out with various different reasons and conclusions. A new theory according to Dr. David Lichter, a Neurology professor at University of Buffalo blames the over exposure of media and social network for this illness.

“I think you do have the potential for people going online and witnessing other student’s behavior, then I think this medium has the potential to spread it beyond the immediate environment,”

said Dr. David Lichter.

This new theory claims that the students suffering from Leroy illness must be unconsciously mimicking symptoms uploaded via videos uploaded on YouTube and Facebook.

Is it really possible that this illness can multiply through mediums?

Dr. David Litcher states,

“Yes that is exactly what I’m saying. It is just an extension of what we’ve seen with previous outbreaks of this kind. It is some kind of unconscious mimicry that is going on in individuals who are stressed and suggestible and vulnerable.”

For those who have a little or no knowledge about LeRoy illness, it is a medical phenomenon predictably called “mass psychogenic outbreak”. This illness has been found in 12 girls from Le Roy, N.Y. who were found exhibiting uncontrollable verbal eruptions and tics several months ago.

The new study helds social media responsible for the contraction of this new found illness. This mental illness has again raised several question on social media and its over use. Do you think social media is used excessively in the modern world? Should there be a controlled exposure to social media? We will let you be the judge of that.
