The online mega body, Google has issued a statement before the court hearing regarding the alleged controversy of hosting objectionable and obscene content in India. According to Google, it is practically impossible to monitor all data that is submitted by users. As monitoring content on different websites is a tedious task, Google cannot come to terms with the Indian Government.
Besides Google, there are 21 social media companies who are scheduled to appear in the Delhi Lower court on March 13th 2012.
This is what Google India’s Chief Business Officer, Mr. Nikesh Arora had to say,
“I’m hoping there will be a balanced debate around it and eventually the right thing would happen. We cannot censor the Web. We cannot censor the ability of people to express themselves around the world.”
He also added,
“I think the idea of censoring everything and pre- clearing everything is going to fundamentally, sort of, taint the growth of the Indian economy in India and vis-a-vis the world.”
The 21 companies in question, including Google and Facebook have challenged summon in Delhi High Court.
The current legal actions are based on a petition filed by a Delhi resident, Vinay Rai, who had evidence of obscene depiction of Prophet Muhammad, Hindu deities and Jesus Christ, against the listed websites.
