It began as a mere battle, but is now on the brink of an online music war.

Recently, Apple was screaming over rooftops and taking pot-shots at social networking biggies, Facebook and Twitter. Why? Well that because of their new revelation of Ping – the music-based social network. As for you Apple, there’s news!

The Alpha search engine company, Google, is on the verge of stepping foot into this arena. According to a source; the end of 2010 may see Google, introducing its very own digital music service. Talks of a downloading store for music as well as a feature known as the ‘song locker service’ that facilitates easy access for users to their music libraries online are being considered.

The music industry, apparently is eagerly awaiting the online giant to send out a green signal, even though licensing is not yet made official. Let’s not snatch away the glory from Apple’s iTunes that is the core reason for sales in the digital music industry soaring up. However, on the other side, the monotonous monopoly in the market by Apple has supposedly left record label companies sulking. The company to come closest to Apple is the Amazon MP3 store with a reported market share of 12%. An executive of a label company stated,

“Finally here‘s an entity with the reach, resources and wherewithal to take on iTunes as a formidable competitor by tying it into search and Android mobile platform. What you’ll have is a very powerful player in the market that’s good for the music business.”

With Apple’s cemented iTunes, Sony’s recent Music Unlimited and Google’s plan to armor themselves with a digital music service; it might take a long while to see the dust settle from this war…
