Digi Mouth just reported about the Swedish-Indian startup VNL offering cost-effective, environ-friendly  base stations.

Now even Nokia Siemens Network (NSN) is busy setting up 3, 500 eco-friendly base transceiver stations (BTS) every month. NSN has been focusing only on eco-friendly BTS backed by novel technologies. The setup work has been going on for quite a while with 10, 000 BTS erected every month. And NSN is responsible of setting up one-third of them.

The new BTS will cut expenses by 40% and reduce energy consumption by 70% compared to traditional diesel-generated power-guzzlers. The installation of BTS will be helpful in addressing the bulk 8-9 million subscribers added in rural areas. In fact energy costs were a major concern with the rural bulk of subscribers which can be tackled with the new cost-effective, eco-friendly BTS. But NSN is still facing logistical challenges with biofuel technology.

This is not a sudden surge of events. This work has been under progress for some time now. The entire telecom industries interest in rural India seems promising. But we will have to wait for a while for any outcome. Till then keep coming back for some more news on the Indian telecom industry.
