UTV is on an acquisition spree. After its recent acquisition of IT Nation, UTV Software Communications is back in news with its latest acquisition of California-based True Games Interactive.
The acquisition is done through its gaming division UTV Interactive. The Indian media giant has acquired 80% stake in True Games Interactive, a gaming company focusing on the online multiplayer game module. Other than a breakthrough in the online gaming space, UTV will have command over development, publishing and IP ownership.
UTV interactive had acquired a major stake (51%) in Indiagames in 2006 and a domineering stake in UK console gaming company Ignition Entertainment.
Though the prospects for UTV (in online, console and mobile gaming) seem bright I feel there is still lot of work to be done. With ever growing international investors India has seen a drop in the gaming community. With online gaming at a nascent stage console gaming seems like a dream. There are a lot of factors to the mushrooming growth of online and console gaming – broadband connectivity, user mentality and lack of quality games.
