The sudden shutter down of Yahoo! GeoCities- apparently a much sought after web hosting service, founded by David Bohnett and John Rezner in the late 94 as Beverly Hills Internet, leaves many an eye disappointed.
geocities-logo-aHaving started and gained recognition, Geocities caught the attention of eminent web-giants, including Yahoo, who believed and invested extensively in GeoCities. Proved right and having provided a much required push to many a web designer in the field of web designing, GeoCities moved up the ladder quick acting as a beneficial web hosting application that contributed to its immense growth. And growing at a striking pace with its consistent service, by October 1997, GeoCities was the proud host to millions of users knocking at its door which led Yahoo to take over Geocities for a plush price of $3.57 billion, owing to its tremendous success.
But shockingly, after over a decade of its flawless service and popularity, on 23rd April 2009, Yahoo announced the termination of GeoCities discouraging any new registrations. And though the existing GeoCities accounts remain active, according to the recent announcements in June 2009, Yahoo would be closing the application on 26th October 2009 from whence, the application will no longer be available on Yahoo; users may be aware that they would not be able to access their files.
As expected, Yahoo is now egging its users to upgrade their usage to fee-based Yahoo Web hosting service which you’ll be able to accomplish in two easy steps.
•    Move your files to Yahoo Web Hosting, which will be priced at only $4.99/month
•    Download the files and upload it to any other web hosting provider
And of course, one thing led to the other. In response to the closure, rival web hosting services have now begun competing for being the host of web sites that were then with GeoCities. For an idea, German web host Jimdo, have already started encouraging the GeoCities users to enlist their sites on Jimdo. User’s dilemma is what is to follow.
Meanwhile, for sheer consolation, Yahoo has set up help providing assistance for file downloading. You may now help yourself!
