Users have to submit videos about global issues which will broadcast at the upcoming UN meet.
World leaders had devised the Millennium Development Goals (in September 2000) at the United Nations Millennium Summit. The world leaders set time-bound and measurable goals for combating poverty, hunger, disease, illiteracy, environmental degradation and discrimination against women. And they even set a deadline of September 2015 to achieve the Millennium Development Goals.
Since then there has been no great changes initiated and the entire process seems slow (as usual). So, in a bid to remind our world leaders about their failed promises YouTube and a few celebrities with the help of varied NGO’s have launched a new channel christened In My Name on YouTube.
Users can even participate in alarming their government by uploading videos stating their name, home country, and a message for their government. Users from around the world can upload videos till 1st November 2008. The most powerful submissions from across the globe will be broadcast at the United Nations General Assembly. Plus YouTube will broadcast the video at the company’s first live event titled YouTube Live to be held on 22nd November 2008.
Singer-performer for Black Eyed Peas will.i.am, singer-songwriter Angelique Kidjo and hip hop musician- producer apl.de.ap performed a new song at the launch of the new campaign. The song written for the Global Call to Action against Poverty can be viewed here:
will.i.am and other celebrities like John Legend, Scarlett Johansson, Kristin Davis and Elle Macpherson are actively supporting this campaign to enforce politicians and world leaders to keep what they promised. Some of the participating NGO’s are Oxfam, GCAP, Save the Children, Comic Relief, Engender Health, March of Dimes, 1Sky etc.
The best part about the entire concept is that users can be vocal about issues that bother and irk them. In fact there should be many initiatives like these that reiterate the fact that our leaders are not keeping their word of a safer and wondrous world to live.
